Important
Eligibility for visa-free entry is set by North Macedonia's visa policy. Citizens of EU member states and Schengen-area countries (including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) may enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and North Macedonia extends 90-day visa-free entry to most nationalities listed in Annex II of the EU Visa Code, such as the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan.
Nationalities that are not visa-free need a short-stay (C) visa for visits of up to 90 days. Anyone — regardless of nationality — who intends to stay longer than 90 days for work, study, family reunification or other long-term reasons must obtain a long-stay (D) visa and a residence permit, which requires an approved ground and a decision from the Ministry of Interior.
Long-term residence generally requires proof of sufficient means of subsistence, secured accommodation, valid health cover and a clean legal record; the specific conditions depend on the residence ground.
