The Skilled Migrant points system

Skilled residence uses a 6-point system, with points from occupational registration, qualifications or income, plus points for skilled work in New Zealand.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

To gain residence through the Skilled Migrant Category, you must be able to claim 6 skilled resident points. You claim 3 to 6 points from one of three bases - occupational registration, a recognised qualification, or your income - and can add up to 3 further points for skilled work in New Zealand.

There are several combinations that reach 6 points: for example, a higher-points qualification or income can qualify you with no New Zealand work, while a lower base can be topped up with points for years of skilled New Zealand work. Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category take effect on 24 August 2026, so check the current points table before you apply.
