Staying in Montenegro beyond 90 days
How the 90/180 short-stay rule works and the routes for staying longer — the long-stay Visa D and temporary residence.
Important
A short stay in Montenegro — visa-free or on a Visa C — cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period, counted from the date of first entry. A foreigner who has stayed the full 90 days may re-enter only after 180 days have elapsed from the first entry.
To stay longer you need either a long-stay visa (Visa D), issued for stays over 90 days but no longer than six months within a one-year period, or a temporary residence permit tied to a purpose such as employment, study, family reunification, business activity or digital nomad status.
Temporary residence is the gateway to permanent residence: five consecutive years of lawful temporary residence can qualify you for a permanent residence permit.
