This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Most travellers apply for a Malawi visa online through the official e-Visa portal at evisa.gov.mw, operated by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. The process has three stages: register and complete the application form with your passport data, travel details and photograph; pay the visa fee (and any convenience fee) by Visa or Mastercard and receive an email confirmation; then download and print the approved e-Visa to present at the port of entry.

Nationals of "Category One" countries must hold a visa or prior authorisation before departure, so applying online in advance is essential. Nationals of "Category Two" countries may obtain a visa on arrival at designated ports of entry, but the Department strongly encourages applying online beforehand to reduce delays. An approved e-Visa does not guarantee entry - the immigration officer at the border retains discretion over admission.

The online steps

  • Create an account and complete the form at evisa.gov.mw
  • Upload your passport page and a passport-style photo
  • Pay by card and keep the confirmation email
  • Print the approved e-Visa for the border
