How nationality and country category determine whether you need a visa before travel or can get one on arrival.
Important
Whether you need a visa for Malawi, and how you obtain it, depends on your nationality. The Department of Immigration divides countries into two categories. Nationals of "Category One" countries must obtain a visa or prior authorisation before departing for Malawi. Nationals of "Category Two" countries are eligible to obtain a visa on arrival at designated ports of entry, a facility the Department confirmed for all designated ports with effect from 24 February 2026.
Even where visa on arrival is available, travellers are encouraged to apply online in advance. Beyond the visitor categories, anyone intending to work, study, invest or settle in Malawi needs the relevant permit rather than a visa.
