Malawian Spouse and Dependant Residence

Who it is for

• Foreign spouses of Malawian citizens

How to apply

• Complete the Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) application form
• Submit it with evidence of the family relationship and supporting documents to Immigration Headquarters or a Regional Immigration Office
• Pay the processing fee on submission; on approval, pay the appropriate fees within 30 days of notification

Requirements

There are two official routes for a spouse or dependant of a Malawian. A foreign wife of a Malawian, and over-aged dependants of a Permanent Residence Permit holder, are named among those who may apply for a Permanent Residence Permit. Separately, a woman married to a Malawi citizen may be registered as a citizen of Malawi on the strength of the marriage.

A visitor who has already spent the maximum of 90 days in Malawi but has a legitimate and justifiable reason for continued residence (for example to remain with family) applies for a Temporary Residence Permit at a Regional Office or Headquarters.
