Most visitors to Madagascar apply through the official e-Visa portal before travel or obtain a tourist visa on arrival at an international airport. The e-Visa is completed online, paid for by card, and returned by email as an electronic authorisation to present on arrival.

Long-term stays for work, study, investment or family reasons use a different mechanism: a short 'transformable' visa is obtained from a Malagasy embassy or consulate abroad and then converted, after arrival, into long-stay status and a residence card by the Immigration and Emigration Service of the Ministry of the Interior (or via EDBM for investors). There is a limited window after entry to lodge this file, so it should be prepared before travel.
