Eligibility for entry to Madagascar depends on nationality and the purpose of travel. Nationals of most countries can obtain a short tourist visa either online as an e-Visa or on arrival; a small number of nationalities are refused entry and transit under the published policy.

For anything beyond a short tourist visit — employment, study, investment or joining family — travellers must fit one of the recognised transformable-visa categories and meet the associated conditions. Long-stay status and a residence permit are granted at the discretion of the immigration service and are not automatic.
