How to apply for an Iran visa

Most Iran visas are applied for online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa portal, which issues a visa grant number before you collect the visa at a consulate or, where eligible, at the airport.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran operates the official electronic visa system. You start by creating an application on the portal, authenticating your email address, completing the form and uploading your documents. After review, the system issues a visa reference (grant) number.

Depending on your nationality and visa type, you then either collect the visa at a chosen Iranian embassy or consulate (sometimes after a short interview) or, if eligible, receive it on arrival at a major Iranian airport. Several nationalities must apply well in advance and travel through a registered tour agency.

Typical steps

  • Create the application on the MFA e-visa portal and verify your email
  • Complete the form and upload passport, photo and supporting documents
  • Choose the consulate for collection, or note airport eligibility
  • Pay the applicable fee and, if requested, attend an interview
  • Receive the visa grant number and have the visa issued
