Who needs a visa for Iran

Whether you need a visa, and whether you can get one on arrival, depends on your nationality; several nationalities must apply in advance and travel on a guided tour.

Some nationalities can enter Iran visa-free for a set number of days, many can obtain a visa on arrival at major airports, and others must apply in advance through an Iranian consulate. A defined list of nationalities is excluded from both visa-free entry and visa on arrival.

Under a 2025 policy revision, citizens of certain countries — reported to include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and various European, Australian and New Zealand nationals — face additional requirements such as longer processing and mandatory guided tours arranged through a registered agency.
