Eritrea controls departures through an exit-visa system and applies strict rules on electronics and internal travel.
Important
Eritrea is unusual in requiring an exit visa to leave the country for long-term residents and Eritrean nationals. The exit visa is obtained from the Immigration Office in Asmara before departure and should be applied for ahead of the intended travel date. Short-term foreign visitors travelling on a valid entry visa generally do not need an exit visa, provided they leave before their entry visa expires.
On entry, strict rules apply to electronics: laptops, mobile phones and cameras must be declared to customs, and undeclared items can be affected at departure. Travellers should keep their declaration and be prepared to account for electronic devices when leaving.
Once in Eritrea, the one-month stay granted on arrival can be extended or renewed at the Immigration Office in Asmara. Visitors should also be aware that travel outside the capital may be subject to permits and local controls.
