Eritrea requires a visa from almost all foreign travellers. Whether you need a visa, and which category applies, depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit — tourism, business, employment, study, family visit, transit or official duties.

Everyone entering Eritrea must present either an original Eritrean National ID or a valid entry visa on arrival. Because Eritrea does not routinely issue visas at the border, travellers should assume they must secure the correct visa in advance through an Eritrean mission.

Match the visa to your purpose

  • Business meetings and activities — Business Visa
  • Paid work with an Eritrean sponsor — Employment Visa
  • Study at an Eritrean institution — Student Visa
  • Visiting or joining relatives — Family Visit / Union Visa
  • Passing through to another country — Transit Visa
