El Salvador classifies foreign nationals by nationality: many can enter visa-free for tourism, some need a consular visa obtained abroad, and others need a consulted visa that requires prior authorisation from the Director General of Migration. Guatemalans, Hondurans and Nicaraguans move under the CA-4 arrangement.

Eligibility for residence depends on purpose and, in some cases, nationality — for example, Spaniards and Hispanic Americans reach permanent residence and naturalisation on a shorter track, and Central Americans by birth have a simplified permanent-residence route.
