The CA-4 Agreement and Your Stay

How the Central America-4 free-movement agreement affects visitors to El Salvador and the shared authorised period of stay.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

El Salvador is part of the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, which allows nationals and many foreign visitors to move between the four countries without additional border formalities. Crucially, the authorised period of stay is shared across all four countries and does not reset each time you cross an internal CA-4 border.

This means a visitor admitted for a short stay must count time spent anywhere in the CA-4 region against that single authorised period. Travellers planning to move around Central America should track their cumulative days and check the current authorised period with the DGME.
