From Residence to Belizean Citizenship
How Belize's routes connect: a year of lawful residence leads to permanent residence, and five years of permanent residence opens the door to citizenship by registration.
Important
Belize's long-term routes are sequential. A foreign national who lives lawfully in Belize for at least one year — without leaving for more than 14 days in that year — and can show financial stability may apply for Permanent Residence. Permanent residents must keep genuine ties to Belize, not residing outside the country for more than 30 consecutive days or more than three months in any twelve-month period.
After holding Permanent Residence for at least five years, a resident may apply for citizenship by registration under the Belizean Nationality Act (Chapter 161). A separate, faster route exists for people married to a Belizean national for at least one year. Guatemalan nationals are specifically excluded from citizenship through registration.
The pathway in steps
- Enter and reside lawfully (visa/permit as required)
- After 1 year of lawful residence: apply for Permanent Residence
- Maintain residence within the permitted absence limits
- After 5 years of Permanent Residence: apply for citizenship by registration
- Alternative: citizenship after 1 year of marriage to a Belizean national
