Who Needs a Zambian Visa
How Zambia classifies nationalities into visa-exempt, visa-on-arrival and visa-required groups, and who qualifies for each entry route.
Important
Zambia divides visitors by nationality into reference groups: some nationals are visa-exempt for qualifying visits, some are eligible to obtain a visa on arrival at a port of entry, and others must obtain a visa in advance from a Zambian mission or through the e-Visa portal. Your nationality determines which group applies to you.
The purpose of travel matters too. Tourist visits and business visits have different permitted durations, and staying to work, study, invest or join family requires the appropriate permit rather than a visitor visa. All persons who ordinarily require a visa to enter Zambia are eligible to apply for an e-Visa, subject to the minimum age rule.
Key eligibility points
- Nationality sets whether you are visa-exempt, visa-on-arrival, or visa-required
- Purpose (tourism vs business vs work/study/family) determines the correct visa or permit
- Persons under 16 cannot hold an e-Visa in their own name
- Longer or repeat stays may require a visiting permit or an immigration permit rather than a visa
