Processing times depend on the route and on demand. For work permits, the Immigration Division advises that applications be submitted well in advance of the date the employee is due to start. Student permit applicants are given a window after arrival to obtain their permit, which differs for CARICOM and non-CARICOM students.

Timelines for visas, extensions of stay, residence and citizenship are not fixed publicly and vary case by case. Plan ahead and apply as early as your route allows.

Timing points to note

  • Work permits: submit the application at least six weeks before the proposed start date.
  • Student permits: CARICOM students are given six months and non-CARICOM students three months to obtain the permit.
  • Other routes: no fixed public processing time — apply early.
