Important

How you apply for a Tongan visa depends on your nationality and purpose. Visa-exempt travellers are issued a free Visitor's Visa on arrival by a Customs officer, provided they hold a valid onward ticket and sufficient funds. Nationals who are not visa-exempt must apply for an entry visa in advance.

Work, business, study, assured-income and residency permits are applied for before travel, either through a Tongan diplomatic mission or directly with the Immigration Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Employment and business routes additionally require a Letter of Support from the Ministry of Labour, Commerce & Industries before Immigration issues the permit.

General steps

  • Identify the correct route for your purpose (visit, work, business, study, residency)
  • Gather the required documents and, where relevant, obtain a ministry support letter
  • Submit the application to a Tongan mission or the Immigration Division and pay the fee
  • For extensions, apply at an Immigration office in Nuku'alofa or Neiafu before expiry
