Who Is Eligible to Enter or Live in Tonga

How nationality and purpose determine whether you need a Tonga visa and which route applies.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Eligibility to enter Tonga depends first on nationality: citizens of visa-exempt countries receive a free Visitor's Visa on arrival, while others must obtain an entry visa beforehand. All travellers must hold a passport valid for at least six months and be able to show onward travel and adequate funds.

For longer stays, eligibility depends on purpose. Work requires a job and ministry support; business requires an approved venture; study requires a school acceptance; the Assured Income Visa requires a qualifying overseas income; and the Residency Visa is aimed at those with Tongan heritage or family ties.
