This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Poland's national long-stay routes are purpose-based: you qualify by showing a concrete reason to stay in Poland for more than 90 days, such as work, study, business activity, or family life, together with the means to support yourself and health cover. The national (D) visa is the entry route obtained from a consulate abroad; the temporary residence permit is the in-country route for continuing or extending a stay.

A temporary residence permit is generally available to a third-country national whose circumstances justify a stay longer than three months. Each basis (work, study, family, business, and others) has its own specific conditions, but they share a common set of core requirements.

Common eligibility principles

  • A genuine, documented purpose for a long stay (over 90 days)
  • A valid travel document
  • Health insurance (Schengen travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 for the visa, or Polish public health cover)
  • A stable and regular source of income sufficient to cover living costs without recourse to social assistance
  • A secured place of residence in Poland
  • No grounds for refusal (for example, an entry ban or a threat to public order or security)

Duration of the national visa and permit

  • A national (D) visa authorises a stay of more than 90 days, with a maximum validity of up to 1 year
  • A temporary residence permit is granted for the period justified by the purpose of stay, up to a statutory maximum for each category
  • Longer-term stability routes (permanent residence and the long-term EU resident permit) are separate permits with their own qualifying periods and conditions
