Iceland Visa Extension Guide (2026)
Explore the Iceland Visa Extension Guide (2026) to learn about eligibility and procedures for extending your visa in crucial situations.
Information only
Extending an Iceland Schengen Visa is only possible in limited cases under the Schengen Visa Code. A visa may be extended where the visa holder proves force majeure, humanitarian reasons or serious personal reasons that prevent departure from the Schengen area before the visa expires or justify an extension. Extensions are exceptional and are not granted for ordinary tourism or convenience.
Who Can Apply for a Visa Extension
You may apply to extend your Iceland visa if:
If none of these exceptional grounds apply, you must leave Iceland and the Schengen area before your visa or authorised stay expires.
- There are humanitarian reasons preventing your departure (e.g., sudden illness or hospitalisation).
- Serious personal reasons arise, such as the death or severe illness of a close family member in Iceland.
- There are force majeure events (e.g., natural disaster, airspace closure, or strike affecting travel).
- The visa holder can provide evidence of serious personal reasons justifying an extension of the visa validity period or authorised duration of stay.
How to Apply for an Iceland Visa Extension
Visa extension requests in Iceland are handled by the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Since May 2026, the Directorate of Immigration no longer handles visa extensions.
Follow the official visa extension instructions on Ísland.is or contact the Ministry for Foreign Affairs at visa@utn.is for visa extension enquiries.
- Submit your request before your current visa expires.
- Provide evidence explaining why you cannot leave Iceland on time (e.g., medical certificate, travel cancellation proof).
- Include your current visa, passport copy, insurance, and updated itinerary.
- Attend an in-person appointment if required by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs or the relevant Icelandic authority.
Documents Required
To support your extension request, prepare the following documents:
- Completed visa extension application form or request, submitted as instructed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
- Valid passport or travel document. It should remain valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen area, unless the competent authority accepts otherwise in an exceptional case.
- Proof of valid travel medical insurance covering the extended stay, where applicable.
- Proof of financial means to support yourself during the extra days.
- Medical certificates, travel disruption proof, or official letters supporting your reason for extension.
Fees and Processing Time
Visa extension fees depend on the reason for the extension under the Schengen Visa Code.
During the review period, you should remain available in Iceland and follow the instructions of the competent Icelandic authority. Unless the authority decides otherwise, the territorial validity of an extended visa remains the same as the original visa.
- Extensions based on force majeure or humanitarian reasons are granted free of charge. Extensions based on serious personal reasons are subject to a EUR 30 fee. Payment must be made as instructed by the competent Icelandic authority.
- Processing times for visa extension requests vary depending on the circumstances, evidence provided and the competent authority’s review. No fixed 10-working-day decision period should be guaranteed.
What Happens if You Overstay Without an Extension
Overstaying an Iceland visa can result in:
It is critical to apply for an extension before your current visa expires or leave Iceland within the permitted stay.
- Fines or entry bans to Iceland and other Schengen states.
- Rejection of future visa applications.
- Possible detention or removal from Iceland.
After Your Application
If your extension is approved, the extension is issued in the form of a visa sticker showing the updated visa validity, duration of stay and territorial validity.
If your extension request is refused, you must follow the instructions and deadline given in the decision. Any appeal or review rights will be explained in the decision and must be followed according to Icelandic rules.
