Eligibility for a Denmark visa application
A Danish national residence permit is granted on a specific ground - such as work, study, family or descent - each with its own qualifying conditions under the Aliens Act.
Important
There is no single long-stay category in Denmark: eligibility depends entirely on the ground you apply under, and you must meet the conditions attached to that particular route. The main national grounds are employment, study, family reunification, and special categories such as former Danish citizens or people of Danish descent. Non-EU/EEA nationals apply under the Danish Aliens Act; EU, EEA, Swiss and Nordic citizens follow separate, more open rules.
Because each route sets its own tests (a qualifying job offer, admission to an approved education, a genuine family relationship, and so on), the practical first step is identifying the correct ground and then checking that route's specific requirements before applying.
Common national grounds
- Work: an approved employment scheme (for example the Pay Limit Scheme, Positive Lists, Fast-track, or researcher routes).
- Study: admission to or completion of a recognised educational programme.
- Family: reunification with a family member living in Denmark.
- Former Danish citizens (Aliens Act section 9 d) and people of Danish descent (typically section 9 c(1)).
Key principles
- You must qualify under a specific route and meet its documentation and (where relevant) income, housing or language conditions.
- EU/EEA/Swiss and Nordic citizens follow separate EU residence rules rather than the Aliens Act permit routes.
- Later permanent residence is a separate step with its own requirement of several years' lawful residence (generally 8 years, in certain cases 4).
