Bulgarian Permit for Freelance (Self-Employed) Activities

Who it's for

• Non-EU professionals who want to work independently in Bulgaria (consultants, creatives, specialists)

Requirements

• A detailed plan describing the intended freelance activity
• Proof of education and professional qualifications relevant to the activity
• Evidence of prior relevant work experience
• Proof of sufficient financial means to support the activity and yourself
• Valid passport, health insurance and proof of accommodation
• Any additional documents the Employment Agency requires for the specific profession

What you can do

• Carry out your profession in Bulgaria on a self-employed basis
• Reside in Bulgaria on a continuous residence permit tied to the activity
• Renew annually while the freelance activity continues
• Build toward long-term / permanent residence through continuous legal stay

How to apply

The applicant submits the freelance-activity permit application, with the activity plan and supporting evidence, to the Employment Agency, which decides on the permit.

With the permit granted, the applicant applies for a type 'D' long-stay visa at the competent Bulgarian consulate.

After arrival, the applicant attends the regional Migration Directorate to obtain a continuous residence permit and renews it before expiry.
