Processing times for a Bulgaria visa application
Bulgaria's national process runs in two stages: the Type D visa decision at the consulate abroad, then a fast residence-permit decision by the Migration Directorate after arrival.

Bulgaria's national long-stay process has two separate timelines. First, the Bulgarian mission abroad decides the Type D visa; then, after you enter Bulgaria on that visa, the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior decides your residence-permit application. Plan for both stages rather than a single wait.
The residence-permit stage is governed by statutory deadlines, but the consular Type D stage depends on the mission and the complexity of your route, so start early and apply well before you intend to travel (applications are accepted up to three months ahead).
Stage 1 - Type D visa (at the consulate abroad)
- Decided by the Bulgarian embassy/consulate; timing varies by mission and by the legal ground of the visa
- A mandatory personal interview forms part of the process
- Apply up to three months before the intended travel date to allow margin
Stage 2 - residence permit (Migration Directorate, in Bulgaria)
- The application is examined and decided within up to 14 days
- Where there is legal or factual complexity or a need for additional documents, the term may be extended by one month
- You must lodge this application within the period of stay allowed by your Type D visa
