How to convert a Type D visa into a Bulgarian residence permit, meet address-registration duties, and get the residence card after entering the country.
Important
The Type D visa gets you into Bulgaria; it does not itself grant residence. After entering, you must apply to the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior for a residence permit while your visa's permitted period of stay is still valid. Once a residence permit is issued, the long-stay visa is cancelled.
You should apply promptly on arrival. The application is examined within up to 14 days (extendable by one month in complex cases), after which, if approved, your Bulgarian residence card is produced.
Convert the visa to a residence permit
- Apply in person at the Migration Directorate (Sofia) or your regional Migration office, within the stay period allowed by your Type D visa
- Bring proof of accommodation, health/social insurance and sufficient means, plus documents for your specific ground of stay
- Provide biometrics for the residence card and pay the applicable issuance fee
Registration and the residence card
- Have a registered address in Bulgaria (proof of accommodation is part of the residence application)
- Collect your residence permit card in person once it is ready
- Track the card's validity and renewal date - continuous residence permits are time-limited and must be renewed before expiry
Later status
After the required period of lawful, uninterrupted residence (generally five years under the Foreigners Act), eligible residents may apply to the Migration Directorate for long-term or permanent residence status.
