Austrian Student Residence Permit

Who it's for

Non-EU nationals who have been admitted to a degree or ordinary study programme at an Austrian higher-education institution and who can support themselves for the duration of their studies.

Requirements

• Admission/enrolment confirmation from a recognised Austrian institution
• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover living costs for the stay
• Proof of adequate accommodation in Austria
• Comprehensive health insurance valid in Austria
• Valid travel document
• At renewals, evidence of adequate academic progress

What you can do

• Live in Austria for the duration of your approved studies
• Renew the permit each year while making study progress
• Take up limited employment subject to the rules for students
• Move onto a Red-White-Red Card for graduates after completing your studies

How to apply

First applications are usually made at the competent Austrian embassy or consulate abroad; those already legally in Austria or visa-exempt may apply with the residence authority.

For a first application, sufficient means and accommodation generally only need to be shown credibly (e.g. a maintenance declaration by parents or a preliminary rental/student-hall reservation).
