Applicants should prepare a digitised passport and the supporting documents relevant to their route. For entry authorisations, the SMF requires a passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date, a confirmed return or onward ticket, accommodation details, and proof of sufficient means of subsistence (the SMF cites €100 per day).

Residence-permit applications through e-Cidadão additionally require a criminal record certificate, proof of adequate accommodation, a passport with validity exceeding one year, and category-specific evidence such as an employment contract, proof of enrolment or family documents.
