Malaysia Visa Eligibility

How eligibility for entering Malaysia is determined by nationality, purpose and, for longer stays, sponsorship, income or financial criteria.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Eligibility to enter Malaysia depends first on nationality: the Immigration Department's Visa Requirement by Country listing shows whether your nationality is visa-free, needs an eVISA, or needs a visa obtained from a Malaysian mission. Your purpose then determines which route applies — a social visit, work, study, joining family, or long-stay residency.

Longer-term routes add their own eligibility tests. Work passes require a job offer and employer sponsorship; student passes require an offer from an approved institution; family passes require proof of the relationship (and, for dependants of workers, a minimum principal salary); and long-stay programmes such as MM2H require meeting financial and property criteria.
