Official guidance Regularly updated

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

As a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), The Gambia allows ECOWAS citizens to enter without a visa. Residence permits are issued in ECOWAS and non-ECOWAS versions, reflecting the different rules that apply to nationals of member states.

Free movement covers entry and short stays; ECOWAS nationals who take up residence or employment still complete the relevant residence or work permit process, and non-ECOWAS nationals additionally obtain an Alien ID card.

Key points

  • ECOWAS citizens enter The Gambia visa-free
  • Residence permits are issued as ECOWAS or non-ECOWAS (biometric)
  • Residence or work still requires the appropriate permit
  • Non-ECOWAS residents also need an Alien ID card
