Tourists admitted to Ecuador are generally given up to 90 days per stay. This can be extended once by applying for a tourist extension (prórroga de turista) for a further period, and a total of 180 days within a 12-month period is widely reported.

A tourist stay is for tourism only and does not permit work or other paid activities. Nationals of special-regime countries must obtain a tourist visitor visa before travel rather than being admitted visa-free.

For stays beyond the tourist limit, or for work, study, family or settlement, a residence visa is required. Overstaying can lead to fines and future entry difficulties, so travellers should track their permitted days carefully.
