Understanding the E-class visa and extensions of stay
How Cambodia's Ordinary (Type E) visa and its EB, ER, ES and EG extension categories work — Cambodia's distinctive long-stay system.

Cambodia's long-stay system is built around the Ordinary Visa (Type E). It is issued for an initial 30 days, after which holders convert it into an extension of stay (EOS) matching their purpose: EB for business and employment, ER for retirement, ES for study, and EG for general/job-seeking purposes.
EB, ER and ES extensions are available in 1, 3, 6 and 12-month options and can be renewed indefinitely, making them the practical basis for living long-term in Cambodia. The EG (general) extension is more limited and typically cannot be renewed in-country, so those intending to stay usually move onto EB, ER or ES.
A crucial point is that the EB visa gives the right to stay, not the right to work. Anyone working must separately obtain a work permit and employment card from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training. Extensions are applied for at the Department of Immigration visa office in Phnom Penh.
