How Bahrain's sponsorship system splits residence between the LMRA (work) and NPRA (residence, family, nationality).
Important
Bahrain operates a sponsorship-based residence system in which most expatriates live in the country under a sponsor. For employment, the sponsor is a Bahrain-licensed employer and the permit is regulated by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) through its Expatriate Management System. The LMRA also processes the direct dependants (spouse and children) of registered workers.
The Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) at the Ministry of Interior handles residence more broadly — including student permits, the Golden Residency, dependants outside the standard LMRA categories (such as parents and siblings), and nationality matters. Understanding which authority owns your route is the key to applying through the correct official channel.
