Living and Working in The Bahamas as a Foreign National
How the separation between the right to reside and the right to work shapes a foreign national's options in The Bahamas.

A defining feature of the Bahamian system is that residence and the right to work are handled separately. Holding a residence permit - whether a Permit to Reside, a Home Owner Resident Permit or the Home Owners Card - does not by itself entitle the holder to work; employment requires a separate work permit tied to a specific employer and job.
Visitors, whether visa-free or on a visitor visa, may not engage in any form of gainful occupation. Remote workers are the notable exception through the BEATS programme, which lets people live in The Bahamas while working online for an employer outside the country, but still bars them from taking local Bahamian jobs.
The clearest paths that combine living and working are the Resident Spouse Permit (which expressly allows a spouse of a Bahamian to live and work) and permanent residence, where the certificate confers the right to reside and, in most categories, to work. Progression typically runs from an annual permit, through renewed permits, toward permanent residence and eventually citizenship for those who qualify.
