The MERCOSUR Residence Agreement
A regional agreement that lets citizens of MERCOSUR member and associated states obtain Argentine residence on the basis of nationality alone, the simplest route for most South American applicants.
Important
Argentina applies the MERCOSUR Residence Agreement, which allows native citizens of member and associated states, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Surinam, to obtain temporary residence based on nationality rather than on a specific work or study reason.
This is the most widely used pathway for regional migrants. Temporary residence is granted for up to two years and is renewable, and after holding it for two years a MERCOSUR national can apply for permanent residence. The reduced documentary burden and the nationality-based criterion make it markedly simpler than the activity-based categories that non-MERCOSUR nationals must use.
