How to Apply for Access, Residence or Service in Vatican City

There is no single Vatican visa application; the process depends entirely on whether you are visiting, entering non-public areas, serving the Holy See or seeking residence.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Vatican City does not operate a general visa office, an e-visa portal or a public immigration application system. What you do depends on your purpose. To visit the public areas, you apply for nothing at the Vatican itself — you simply need lawful entry to Italy, and you book Vatican Museums or papal audience tickets through the official channels.

To enter the non-public parts of the State you need an access authorisation, arranged through a host or office inside the Vatican. To serve in the Pontifical Swiss Guard you apply through the Guard's official recruitment centre in Switzerland. Employment, residence and citizenship follow from appointment to office within the Holy See or the State and are administered by the Governorate rather than applied for openly.
