Sri Lankan visa processing times

How long Sri Lankan visa decisions take depends on the route — the online ETA is typically quick, while residence and citizenship applications take longer and are assessed case by case.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

The ETA is designed for fast turnaround: many applicants receive an approval notice within a short period of applying online, though you should apply well before travel in case of delays or additional checks. The Department advises applying ahead of departure rather than relying on obtaining a visa on arrival.

Residence, investor, dependant, scheme-based and citizenship applications are assessed individually and can take considerably longer, particularly where employer, ministry or Board of Investment approvals and document authentication are involved. The Department does not publish a single fixed processing time covering all categories.

Build in extra time for extensions and renewals, which are handled through the Department's offices and, for tourist visas, an online extension service.
