Eligibility for Czechia long-stay routes
The general principles that determine who can apply for a Czech national long-term visa or long-term residence permit.
Important
Czech national long-stay routes are for third-country nationals (non-EU citizens, and not nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland) who need to stay in Czechia for longer than 90 days for a specific, accepted purpose. Each permit is tied to a single purpose that must genuinely exist and continue for the whole duration of the stay.
The choice of route depends on how long you intend to stay: a long-term visa covers stays of more than 90 days and up to one year, while a long-term residence permit is for a specific purpose lasting more than one year.
Core eligibility principles
- You must be a third-country national needing to stay more than 90 days
- You must have a specific, accepted purpose of stay; not every purpose qualifies
- You must meet the conditions of that purpose (e.g. enrolment for study, a family relationship, a business or employment basis) and fulfil it throughout the stay
- You must show accommodation, sufficient funds and comprehensive medical insurance
Long-term visa vs long-term residence permit
- Long-term visa (Type D): stays over 90 days, issued for a maximum of one year
- Long-term residence permit: a specific purpose lasting more than one year, usually issued for up to 2 years and extendable
Route into a residence permit
- You can generally apply for a long-term residence permit if you already hold a long-term visa issued for the same purpose and that purpose still exists
- Certain categories may apply directly at a diplomatic mission, including family reunification, students, scientific researchers, investors, Employee Card and Blue Card holders, intra-company transferees, and long-term residents of another EU Member State
