Nicaragua classifies foreign nationals into entry categories set by DGME regulation. Category A nationalities may enter visa-free as tourists; Category C nationalities require a consulted visa (visa consultada) authorised in advance by the DGME before boarding transport to Nicaragua. The lists are updated periodically by regulation, so nationals should check the current classification for their passport type.
Eligibility for residence depends on the category applied for — for example a family link to a Nicaraguan or resident, an employment relationship, enrolment at a Nicaraguan educational institution, or qualifying investment or income. Each residence subcategory has its own eligibility evidence, assessed by the DGME.
