Sponsorship and Invitation Requirements

Why almost every Libya visa needs a sponsor or invitation inside the country, and who can act as one.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

A defining feature of Libya's visa system is that nearly every category requires a sponsor or invitation from inside the country. Independent tourism is generally not permitted, so even short visits must be arranged through a recognised party.

Who can sponsor depends on the route: a registered tour operator or local host for tourism, a sponsoring company for business, a registered employer for work, an educational institution for study, or a resident relative for family visits. The sponsor typically obtains the necessary security or approval letters from the Libyan authorities.

Line up your sponsor first — without one, most applications cannot proceed, regardless of nationality.

Typical sponsors by route

  • Tourism — registered Libyan tour operator or local host
  • Business — inviting company approved by the Department of Passports and Citizenship
  • Work — registered Libyan employer with labour authorisation
  • Study — the admitting educational institution
  • Family — a resident relative or host in Libya
