How to apply for a Ghana visa
A plain-language overview of how to apply for a Ghana visa, including documents GIS requires and when Visa on Arrival applies, with links to the official Ghana Immigration Service pages.
Important
The steps below are the general shape of a Ghana visa application. Your exact requirements depend on your nationality, the visa type you need and your circumstances, so always confirm against the official Ghana Immigration Service pages linked on this page.
Choose the right visa
Decide which visa fits your trip — a tourist/visitor visa, a business visa, or a transit visa. Most visas are obtained in advance at a Ghanaian diplomatic mission; the Visa on Arrival is only for emergency situations described by the Ghana Immigration Service.
Gather your documents
The Ghana Immigration Service asks visitors for, among other things, a passport valid for at least six months, proof of a hotel booking, a return ticket and a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Business applicants also need letters from their organisation and their Ghana-based associates. Follow the checklist on the official GIS pages.
Apply at a Ghanaian mission
Tourist, business and most other visas are applied for at a Ghanaian embassy, high commission or consulate. Use only the official Ghana Immigration Service channels linked on this page.
Emergency entry only
If there is no Ghanaian mission near you, or you are travelling at short notice, the Visa on Arrival (Emergency Entry Visa) may apply. Check your eligibility against the official GIS Visa on Arrival page before you rely on it.
