Cyprus, the EU and Schengen Visa Recognition
Why Cyprus issues national visas but recognises many EU/Schengen visas and permits for short stays.
Important
Cyprus is a member of the European Union but is not yet part of the Schengen Area, so it operates its own national visa system rather than issuing Schengen visas. This distinction matters when planning travel, because a Cyprus national visa and a Schengen visa are not automatically interchangeable.
To ease travel, since June 2014 Cyprus recognises valid double or multiple-entry Category C Schengen visas as equivalent to its national visa for transit or stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. In addition, third-country nationals holding a valid Category D visa or residence permit issued by an EU member state (other than the UK and Ireland) or a Schengen country may enter Cyprus without a separate Cyprus visa, provided they meet the standard entry conditions.
What this means for travellers
- Cyprus issues its own national visas (not Schengen visas)
- A valid double/multiple-entry Category C Schengen visa is recognised for stays up to 90/180 days
- A valid EU/Schengen Category D visa or residence permit can allow entry without a separate Cyprus visa
- You must still meet passport, purpose, funds and admissibility conditions on entry
