Requirements

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months with at least 2 blank visa pages
  • A completed, printed and signed online application form with one recent white-background passport photo
  • A Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China (for J1), or by the Information Department or another authorised entity (for J2)
  • An official letter from the media organisation the journalist works for
  • Approval formalities completed in advance with the press section of the Chinese embassy/consulate

How to apply

  • Contact the press section of the Chinese embassy or consulate for your area first and complete the required approval formalities
  • Obtain the Visa Notification Letter from the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or authorised entity) and an official letter from your media organisation
  • Complete the COVA application form at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA and upload your documents
  • Submit your passport and supporting documents as directed, pay the fee, and collect your passport when ready

  • Printed, signed COVA confirmation page and a recent passport photo
  • Visa Notification Letter from the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China (J1) or from the Information Department / other authorised entity (J2)
