Requirements

  • Hold a passport from an ETA-eligible country
  • Be outside Australia when you apply and when the ETA is granted
  • Intend a genuine visit for tourism or business visitor activities (such as making business enquiries, contract negotiations or attending a conference)
  • Be free from tuberculosis
  • Have no criminal convictions for which you were sentenced to a total combined period of 12 months or more, whether or not the sentence was served
  • Not intend to work — it is not lawful to work while holding an ETA

How to apply

According to the Department of Home Affairs, ETA-eligible passport holders apply through the Australian ETA app. Eligible passports include Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong (SAR of China), Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States of America.

The app is a free download from the Apple App Store or Google Play; a service fee is charged per application when you lodge. In most cases you are notified of the outcome immediately, though a decision can sometimes take up to 12 hours.

  • Download the Australian ETA app and check that your passport is ETA-eligible
  • Complete the application in the app while outside Australia
  • Pay the app service fee for each applicant
  • Wait for the result — usually immediate, sometimes up to 12 hours

  • A valid passport from an ETA-eligible country (used to complete the in-app application)
  • A device that can run the Australian ETA app to scan your passport and photo
