Who is this for?

  • People accepted onto an academic course at an approved school (F visa)
  • People accepted onto a vocational or non-academic course at an approved school (M visa)

What you can do

  • Study at the SEVP-approved school named in your application
  • Undertake employment only where specifically authorized under the rules for your visa (for example certain on-campus work, or CPT/OPT for F students)

How to apply

  • Be accepted by an SEVP-approved school and receive a Form I-20
  • Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
  • Complete the online DS-160 form and pay the visa application fee
  • Schedule and attend a visa interview at a US embassy or consulate

Frequently asked questions

  • The F visa is for academic programs (universities, colleges, language schools). The M visa is for vocational or other non-academic programs. The right one depends on your course and school.
