Important information

A visa allows you to travel to a US port of entry, but it does not guarantee admission — entry and the length of your stay are decided by a Customs and Border Protection officer on arrival.

  • Attend business meetings, conferences or trade events, or consult with associates (B-1)
  • Negotiate contracts or settle an estate (B-1)
  • Visit for tourism, or to see family or friends (B-2)
  • Receive private medical treatment (B-2)
  • Take a short recreational course of study not for credit toward a degree (B-2)

Requirements

A consular officer must be satisfied that your visit is genuine and temporary. You will generally need to show:

  • Your visit is temporary, for business, tourism or medical reasons
  • You intend to return home after your stay
  • You can support yourself financially during the visit
  • You have strong family, social or economic ties to your home country
  • You do not intend to seek employment or immigration in the US

How to apply

  • Complete the online DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application form
  • Pay the visa application (MRV) fee — see the fees page for the current amount
  • Schedule and attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate (most applicants aged 14–79)
  • Bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation, photo and any supporting documents

Frequently asked questions

  • No. The visitor visa does not permit paid employment or working for a US employer. To work you need the appropriate work visa.
