What a Permitted Paid Engagement is

A Permitted Paid Engagement lets an overseas expert be paid by a UK source for a specific, invited engagement that relates directly to their profession and expertise. It is an exception to the general rule that Standard Visitors cannot do paid work in the UK.

It is important to understand that PPE is part of the Standard Visitor route, not a distinct visa. The Business Visitor, Academic Visitor and Medical Visitor purposes work the same way — they are all the Standard Visitor route used for a particular purpose. PPE simply has its own narrow set of rules about who qualifies and what they can be paid to do.

Who it is for and what they can do

• Professional artists, entertainers and musicians — being paid to perform, or to talk about, present or launch their work, including giving related lectures and joining judging panels.
• Professional sportspeople — being paid for an activity that relates directly to their sporting profession, for example taking part in a sporting event.
• Qualified lawyers — being paid by a client to represent them in the UK at a court or tribunal hearing, arbitration or other form of legal dispute resolution.
• Lecturers and academic experts — being paid to give a lecture or series of lectures in their area of expertise (but not to take a full-time or part-time teaching post).
• Conference and seminar speakers — being paid to speak at a conference or seminar.
• Academic examiners and assessors — being paid to examine or assess students, or to chair or take part in selection panels.
• Air pilot examiners — being paid to examine UK-based air pilots so they meet national aviation regulatory requirements.

Eligibility

On top of the qualifying profession and activity above, applicants must meet the conditions that apply to every Standard Visitor and the specific PPE conditions.

• The engagement is arranged before travelling to the UK
• There is a written invitation from a UK-based organisation or client
• The engagement relates directly to the applicant's profession and area of expertise
• The engagement will be carried out within the first month (30 days) of arrival
• The applicant will leave the UK at the end of the visit
• The applicant can support and accommodate themselves (and any dependants) and pay for the return or onward journey
• The applicant will not make the UK their main home through frequent or successive visits

Costs

A Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for a stay of up to six months (gov.uk). Applicants who are nationals of countries that do not need a visa do not pay this fee, though those travelling under an Electronic Travel Authorisation pay the separate ETA charge.

Visitors are not normally required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, as the IHS applies to longer-term immigration routes rather than short visits.

Documents you may need

When applying for a Standard Visitor visa, applicants complete an online form and typically provide:

• A passport or travel document valid for the whole stay
• Details of travel dates, accommodation and the estimated cost of the trip
• Current address and how long they have lived there
• Annual income details, where applicable
• Any history of criminal, civil or immigration matters
• For a paid engagement specifically: the written invitation from the UK-based organisation or client and evidence the work relates to their profession
• Depending on circumstances: travel history for the past 10 years, employer or sponsor details, and certified English or Welsh translations of any non-English documents

How to apply

Visa nationals must apply online before travelling to the UK. The earliest an application can be made is three months before travel. As part of the process applicants attend a visa application centre to prove their identity with their passport and give their fingerprints and photograph (biometric information).

Whether a visa is needed at all depends on nationality: some people must apply for a Standard Visitor visa in advance, some travel under an Electronic Travel Authorisation, and some can visit without a visa. Applicants should check their own position on gov.uk before travelling.

Length of stay, extending and switching

A Standard Visitor can usually stay for up to six months, but the paid engagement itself must be completed within the first month. After that, no further paid work may be undertaken.

The route is for short visits. It does not lead to settlement, and a visitor cannot switch into a work or study route from inside the UK on this basis — anyone wanting to work or study longer term normally needs to apply for the appropriate route from outside the UK. Extensions are only possible in limited circumstances (for example continuing private medical treatment) and not to prolong paid work.

How this relates to the wider Standard Visitor route

Permitted Paid Engagements, business visits, academic visits and medical visits are all the same underlying Standard Visitor route used for different purposes — they are not separate visas.
