UK Academic Visitor visa

What it is and who it is for

The Academic Visitor is the Standard Visitor route used by people who work in academia overseas and want to spend time in the UK on academic activity. There is no separate "Academic Visitor visa" application - applicants apply for a Standard Visitor visa (or, depending on nationality, may visit without a visa or with an Electronic Travel Authorisation for shorter stays).

It is aimed at scientists, researchers and academics based at an overseas institution, and at senior doctors and dentists. The defining feature for this group is the option, for those who qualify, to stay for up to 12 months in a single visit rather than the usual 6 months.

• Scientists, researchers and academics taking part in formal exchanges or carrying out research
• Senior doctors and dentists who, in addition, may teach or take part in clinical practice in non-permanent roles
• People who remain employed and paid overseas, not by a UK organisation

What academics can do

The Standard Visitor rules set out specific activities that academics are permitted to carry out. The core academic permissions are:

• Take part in formal exchange arrangements with UK counterparts
• Carry out research, either as part of an overseas job or independently
• For senior doctors and dentists only: teach, examine and take part in clinical practice, provided the role is not permanent

What is not allowed

The route is for temporary visits, not for taking up UK employment. Applicants must not:

• Fill a permanent teaching post or any permanent role
• Take paid work for a UK employer (beyond the narrow Permitted Paid Engagement rules)
• Make the UK their main home through frequent or successive visits
• Claim public funds

Eligibility

Every Standard Visitor must meet the general visitor requirements. In addition, academics applying for a stay of more than 6 months must meet extra requirements.

General requirements - applicants must:

• Extra requirements for stays over 6 months: applicants must be highly qualified in their field - usually holding a PhD or higher
• Extra requirements: applicants must currently work in that field of expertise at an academic institution overseas
• Extra requirements: applicants must not be filling a permanent teaching post

• Hold a valid passport or travel document for the whole stay
• Intend to leave the UK at the end of the visit
• Be able to support themselves (and any dependants) financially without public funds
• Be able to pay for the return or onward journey
• Not intend to live in the UK for long periods through repeated visits

How long you can stay

Most academic visits are limited to 6 months, the standard visitor allowance. Academics who meet the extra eligibility requirements can be granted up to 12 months.

There are two ways to reach a 12-month stay:

• Apply for the longer visa before travelling - granted for up to 12 months (fee £234)
• Or visit for up to 6 months first, then apply to extend from inside the UK for a total stay of up to 12 months (fee £1,172)

Costs

The fee depends on which option is used. Values below are the current gov.uk figures as at the verification date.

Visitors are not normally required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. Visitors should arrange appropriate travel or medical insurance instead, as they are not entitled to free non-emergency NHS treatment.

• Academic visa of up to 12 months applied for before travelling: £234
• Extending inside the UK to a total of up to 12 months: £1,172

Documents to prepare

Applicants should have supporting evidence ready. For an academic staying more than 6 months this typically includes proof of the extra eligibility criteria.

• A valid passport or travel document
• Evidence of qualifications (for longer stays, usually a PhD or higher)
• Proof of current employment at an overseas academic institution
• Details of the research, exchange or clinical activity planned in the UK
• Evidence of funds to cover the stay and the return or onward journey

How to apply

Applications are made online on gov.uk before travelling to the UK. Applicants can apply up to 3 months before the date they intend to travel.

As part of the process, applicants confirm the purpose and length of the visit; those seeking more than 6 months apply for the longer academic visa. After applying online, applicants usually need to prove their identity - either at a visa application centre (often giving biometrics) or, for some, using the UK Immigration: ID Check app.

Partner and children

An academic granted a longer stay can be joined by close family. A partner and children can apply to stay with the academic for up to 12 months. Each family member makes their own application and must meet the visitor requirements.

Extending and switching

An academic who arrives on a 6-month visit can apply from inside the UK to extend, up to a total of 12 months, if they meet the eligibility requirements (fee £1,172). Beyond 12 months the visitor route cannot be extended further.

The visitor route is not a stepping stone to work or residence. Applicants who want an ongoing UK academic role generally cannot switch from a visitor visa into a work route from within the UK and should apply for the appropriate work visa (for example Skilled Worker or Global Talent) from the correct place.

Settlement

This route does not lead to settlement. Time spent in the UK as a visitor, including an academic visitor, does not count towards indefinite leave to remain. Academics seeking a long-term future in the UK should consider a dedicated work or talent route instead.
