What happens when you arrive at the UK border, and what you need to be allowed in.
Important
Having a visa or an ETA lets you travel to the UK, but it does not by itself guarantee entry — a Border Force officer decides whether you can come in when you arrive. This page explains what happens at the border and what to have ready.
At the border
When you arrive at a UK port or airport your identity document (usually your passport) is checked. Depending on your nationality and document you may be able to use automatic ePassport gates, or you will be seen by a Border Force officer. You and your baggage may also be checked at customs.
What you need
- A passport or travel document valid for your whole stay
- A visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if your nationality requires one — check before you travel
- Evidence of your purpose and, for visitors, of funds and onward or return plans if asked
Good to know
Your permission and its conditions apply from the start date of your visa or eVisa. If you have an eVisa, keep the passport in your UKVI account up to date so your status is linked when you travel. Customs rules limit what you can bring in, and you must declare anything above your allowances.
