It is optional and not a Home Office requirement, but a clear cover letter can help a caseworker follow your case, especially where your circumstances are unusual.

What to include

  • The route you are applying for and your main purpose
  • A brief summary of your circumstances
  • A list of the documents you are submitting and what each one shows
  • A short explanation of anything that might otherwise look unclear — gaps, name differences, or third-party funds

Keep it factual

A cover letter should be concise and accurate. It does not add to your eligibility — the decision is based on whether you meet the rules and the evidence you provide. Never include false statements.
