Applying for a UK Spouse Visa from Outside the UK (2026)
Applying for a UK Spouse Visa from Outside the UK (2026)? This guide covers requirements, fees, and processing times for your application.
Information only
Applicants who wish to join their British or settled partners in the UK must apply for a UK Spouse Visa before travelling. This process, known as an “entry clearance” application, must be submitted online from your country of residence and completed through a visa application centre (VAC). This guide explains the process as of October 2026, including documentation, fees, and processing times.
Who Should Apply from Outside the UK?
You must apply from outside the UK if you are:
If you are already in the UK on a valid long-term visa, see Apply Inside the UK (FLR(M)).
- Currently living abroad and wish to join your partner in the UK.
- Not already in the UK on a visa category eligible for switching (such as FLR(M)).
- Visiting temporarily and not permitted to switch in-country.
How to Apply
The application process for a UK Spouse Visa from abroad involves several steps:
For a complete document list, visit the Spouse Visa Documents Checklist (2026).
- Complete the online application form on the official GOV.UK portal.
- Pay the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- Book and attend a biometric appointment at your nearest UK Visa Application Centre.

What Happens After Arrival
Once in the UK, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days. You can then live, work, and study in the UK for 2 years and 9 months under the Spouse Visa category.
For information on extending your stay later, see Extending a UK Spouse Visa (FLR(M)).

- Missing TB test certificate for eligible countries.
- Financial evidence not meeting the £29,000 threshold.
- Incorrect or incomplete document uploads.
